Multiple WhatsApp conversations allegedly found on the phones of the arrested suspects, according to police sources, showed there was “resentment” and the men had been organising the altercations for days. On April 16 during Hanuman Jayanti, there were clashes, and 8 to 9 persons were hurt as a result of gunfire and stone-throwing. Following the skirmishes on April 10 during Ram Navami in various regions of the nation, according to the police, the situation became even worse. While Tabrez attended meetings of the police’s peace committee and was even seen with top officers, Ansar was detained shortly after the violence. In May, police detained him. According to authorities, Ishrafil and his son are still at large.

Senior officer by citing the chargesheet said “The men had discussions with locals in Jahangirpuri about the recent incidents against their community. We have recovered chats where the accused would influence others by saying ‘sab humare against hai, kuch karna hoga’. So far, it seems the men have been mobilising locals for protests since 2019. We found the accused were in touch with organisers and would send locals to Shaheen Bagh to participate in anti-CAA protests. After the Northeast Delhi riots, they wanted to take action but didn’t because of the pandemic. The accused might have sent money to locals for mobilisation. The money angle, involving Ansar, will be probed by the Enforcement Directorate and other teams”.

Additionally, according to the police, they retrieved bottles and bricks from the homes of the accused while discovering firearms and bricks from Ishrafil’s home. On April 16, according to the police, residents and organisations in the area conducted a total of three rallies. During the first two rallies, there was a heated disagreement between the accused and the villagers, but no physical altercation took place. “Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other organisations conducted a third rally in the afternoon. The accused said that the anti-CAA riots and demonstrations had upset them. They were ready for a fight this time since they had organised individuals to take matters into their own hands. However, both sides then began throwing stones at each other,” the officer alleged.
