Telangana’s senior BJP leader G Narayan Reddy has filed a police complaint against Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma after Varma was caught making derogatory remark against NDA’s Presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu.

Varma issued a mild apology from his Twitter account in response to the complaint.

Ram Gopal Varma tweeted on June 22, 2022, “If DRAUPADI is the PRESIDENT who are the PANDAVAS? Also, who are the KAURAVAS, and why is it important? The Mahabharata makes note of the fact that the Pandavas and Kauravas were members of the Hastinapur royal family and Pandavas were wed to Draupadi.

Gulshan Devaiah, a Bollywood actor, joined Varma in questioning the identity of Duryodhana in this tale and added to the disparaging remarks directed at Draupadi Murmu. It is noteworthy that Duryodhana instructed his brother Duhshasana to strip Draupadi in the Mahabharata.

Later, Ram Gopal Varma posted a weak apology on his Twitter account. “This was only mentioned in a genuine irony and not intended in any other manner,” the director wrote. Although Draupadi is one of my favourite characters from the Mahabharata, I only remembered the people who were associated with the name because it is so uncommon. not at all intended to offend anyone’s feelings.

A senior BJP member from Telangana named G Narayan Reddy filed a police report at the Abid Road Police Station stating that the director had tweeted a derogatory statement about Draupadi Murmu. For a seasoned female politician and former governor of Jharkhand, Reddy claimed in his complaint that Varma’s comments on Twitter were very offensive and humiliating. The BJP leader supplied the tweet as evidence along with the police complaint. He emphasised that the police should use the SC/ST Act and that the director should be subject to severe punishment. The police said that once a legal opinion was provided, the necessary measures would be taken.
