A big mob of Islamists surrounded the home of a Hindu sanitation worker on Sunday (August 21) after falsely accusing him of desecrating the Quran. The incident happened in in the Saddar area of Hyderabad in Pakistan. According to reports, the victim, Ashok Kumar, got into a verbal fight with Bilal Abbasi, a local shopkeeper. Abbasi filed a blasphemy case against the Hindu guy after the heated argument between the two. Soon, a group of local Muslims gathered in front of Kumar’s house and requested that he be given to them. The aggressive mob also chanted “Sar Tan Se Juda” and demanded that the Hindu man be killed for allegedly disrespecting the Quran.

In a tweet, Dawn journalist Mubashir Zaidi said, “Hyderabad police dispersed a violent mob which was demanding handing over a Hindu sanitary worker accusing him of blasphemy.” Citing the police he stated that Ashok Kumar was targeted because of a personal dispute with Bilal Abbasi. According to ANI, a Muslim woman burned a copy of the Quran while a Hindu guy was unjustly accused of doing it. Islamists could be seen attempting to break into the Hindu man’s home. However, the police were able to disperse the enraged crowd.

However, Ashok Kumar was detained by the Hyderabad Cantonment police on August 21 as a result of the complaint by Bilal Abbasi’s. Sections 34 and 295B of the Pakistani Penal Code (PPC) were used to charge him. However, nothing was done against the mob that committed acts of violence and vandalism. Instead, the police appeared contrite and begged the populace to refrain from enforcing law on their own.

SSP (Hyderabad) Amjad Ahmed Shaikh said, “The sentiments of all the Muslims are hurt but we shouldn’t harm innocent people in the reaction.”
