A class four student at a public school in Giridih, Jharkhand, was violently thrashed on 9th of July because the student wrote “Jai Shri Ram” on the classroom’s whiteboard. The incident was reported from the village of Palmo in Jharkhand’s Giridih district. Mohammad Abul Kalam, the headmaster of Upgraded Govt Middle School Palmo (UGMSP), reportedly beat the fourth-grade student on July 9 after finding out that the pupil had scribbled “Jai Shri Ram” on the board the day before.Upgraded Govt Middle School is a state-run school for Grades 1 to 8.

The incident came to light after the traumatised boy told his parents about his ordeal. The youngster first held back from informing his family what had happened out of concern for a potential follow-up attack. However, the child’s mental state gave the parents a hint that something was wrong. The youngster finally opened up about his experience after considerable probing and pestering. The parents then told several other parents in their neighbourhood about the terrifying experience. After word got out, the neighbourhood villagers scheduled a meeting for July 13 at the school. The meeting was attended by dozens of people, including several prominent panchayat members, headmaster Abul Kalam, and the school administrative committe. During the meeting, many other parents also accused headmaster Mohammad Abul Kalam of forcing their children to clean the school toilets. Many irate villagers castigated the headmaster for torturing the young children studying in his school.
