After Modi came to power in 2014, he started reversing the process. The first partner he chose in the process was Japan (Shinzo Abe was the PM at that time) who was also feeling intimated by China’s wolf warrior diplomacy.

How India (under Modi) and Japan (under Abe) build the foundations of breaking China’s hegemony in Asia? Lets understand.

  1. He first conceptualized Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) where India had a prominent role to play.
  2. He wanted build deep partnership with India as part of aligning free and democratic countries of the region together.
  3. During his era bilateral relations grew and large developmental and infrastructural projects were developed in the north east and Andaman and Nicobar islands, where china has a clear interest.
  4. The civil nuclear deal was signed during his period removing an important hurdle in India’s entry into the much-delayed Nuclear Suppliers Group.
  5. He spent time in the US and was definitely influenced by its culture and ideas regarding democracy, openness, and internationalism. He became a staunch follower of opening up of economy as a basic requirement for economic prosperity as also political freedom.
  6. During his period Japan’s strained relations with South Korea improved. South Korea is also another big victim China’s bully diplomacy.
  7. During his tenure much progress was made on fructifying the Quadrilateral alliance (called QUAD) between India, Japan, US and Australia.

    No wonder Abe who loved India visited India four times and even became the Chief guest in a Republic Day parade. China clearly was not happy with the economic policy of Abe as well as his right-wing political philosophy.

    Hence it is no surprise many in China are happy with his death.
