On July 15, Dr. Rubaiya Sayeed, the daughter of former Union Home Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, named Yasin Malik, 56, the leader of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), and three other men as her 1989 kidnappers. She was speaking in front of a Jammu-based special CBI court. Five extremists who were imprisoned were freed as a result of the kidnapping. Advocate Monica Kohli said Rubaiya Sayeed identified Yasin Malik as her main abductor. In the statement she made before the court, she categorically stated that Yasin Malik is the one. When asked questions about Malik and photographs were shown, she specifically stated ‘I remember him categorically’. He is the one who said “When I was brought down from the mini bus, he was the one who said ‘get down otherwise you will be dragged out”.

 

Rubaiya Sayeed is the sister of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister, has been asked to appear before the court at the upcoming hearing on August 23. After the kidnapping event, Rubaiya Sayeed chose to remain outside of J&K and currently resides in Tamil Nadu. On December 8 in the evening, Rubaiya Sayeed was taken captive and kept until December 13, 1989. Five known JKLF militants, including Sher Khan, Hamid Sheikh, Altaf Ahmed Bhat, Noor Mohd Kalwal, and Javed Ahmed Zarger, were exchanged for her release.The court had said it was of the considered view that “sufficient grounds were existing for drawing prima facie presumption that the accused have committed offences under Sections 120-B read with Sections 368 RPC and Section 3/4 of TADA Act”.
