Local media has reported that in Italy a draft law meant to outlaw Muslim prayer places outside of mosques has been created by the right-wing coalition party in the country’s government, which is led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

According to the daily 24 Ore, a draft is being discussed in the parliamentary environment committee by the Brothers of Italy (FdI) party would make it illegal to use garages and industrial warehouses as mosques. Using a property as a place of worship will require a documented agreement between the organisation and the Italian government, the daily reported.

The bill was opposed by lawmakers from opposition parties in the parliament’s environment committee. Sami Salem, the imam or prayer leader at the Magliana Mosque in Rome, told the daily that “It is a bill that clearly discriminates against Muslims and does not respect the Italian Constitution that protects all citizens living in Italy.”
