Tata Group has announced plans to invest £4 billion in Somerset to construct a battery plant. It will be the company’s first gigafactory outside of India and is expected to provide the UK’s automotive industry a major boost. At the plant, which is predicy to be in Somerset, up to 4,000 jobs would be created, and thousands more will be added throughout the supply chain.

A new “giga-factory” for electric batteries is expected to be built by Jaguar Land Rover. 9,000 jobs will be created by a multibillion dollar electric car battery factory. With a capacity of 40GW, the new gigafactory will rank among the biggest in Europe.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran thd chairman of Tata Sons on 19th of July said “Our multi-billion-pound investment will bring state-of-the-art technology to the country. It will help to power the automotive sector’s transition to electric mobility, anchored by our own business, JLR. With this strategic investment, the Tata Group further strengthens its commitment to the UK, alongside our many companies operating here across technology, consumer, hospitality, steel, chemicals, and automotive.”

MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset Ian Liddell-Grainger has welcomed the news of the factory as a “breakthrough” for the area, adding that he believes “there’s no doubt we can handle this project” with the county boasting “the finest workforce in Britain”.
