Most things in #Bollywood are a copy-paste from elsewhere. May it be songs, images, storylines, or even dress colors and styles.
The reason behind #LSCFailure is not just the bad acting and terrible storyline, but the fact that Aamir, usually a perfectionist has ended up creating a caricature instead of characters.
Pee Wee Herman is a caricature that may have influenced Aamir’s subconsciousness somewhere along in his career as an artist.
According to dictonary.com, Caricature is defined as – a picture, description, or imitation of a person in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect.
Over the years we have seen Aamir evolve, but not necessarily for the better. His past couple of projects have flopped as unlike his Dangal style, he’s adopted a caricature as character; though PK was a hit, people didn’t catch on the similarities with clownish characters like Pee Wee Herman. Pee-wee Herman is a comic fictional character created and portrayed by American comedian Paul Reubens who has acted in television shows, usually for children.
For those familiar with Pee Wee will obviously be disturbed by the off-putting Laal Singh along with the subtle jabs at conditions such as mental retardation. It is surprising to not see the usual rabid feminist crowds waving the “disabled have been insulted” by the Laal Singh character in the film. Aamir could get away with the caricature-type role in PK given the storyline showed him as a clueless alien, but the cuteness doesn’t transcend to Laal’s autistic, human character.
There are many reasons why films flop and one of the important reasons is the validity of the character – if the audience fails to connect with a character, the film will not run despite millions poured into publicity stunts. Also, there is a knack to copy-pasting jobs. It has to be done sophisticatedly so that the audience isn’t reminded of clown characters while watching a seemingly meaningful film.
Has Aamir learned his lesson, or will the ghost of Pee Wee Herman haunt him out of Bollywood? If he continues on the path he’s been, there’s no real need for #BoycottBollywood type movements. Watching artists cancel themselves is a type of entertainment as well, and these days Bollywood is constantly delivering real-life entertainment minus the high price of tickets and popcorn.
