The Himanta Biswa Sarma government of Assam is taking a tough stand against madrasas and those who illegally occupy government land for terrorism activities. The eviction drive has started on 3rd of September.

Police stated that the process of clearing 330 acres of land in Sonitpur district is going on. Heavy security arrangements have been made for this. More than 50 bulldozers and other heavy machines have been deployed in the operation to demolish illegal houses in No. 3 Chitalmari areas in Barchalla, located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river. Along with this, a large number of laborers have been deployed.

The police officer says that the eviction process is going on peacefully so far. The official says eviction notices were sent to illegal residents of the area. After receiving the notice, most of the residents have left with their belongings.

The work of eviction and demolition of illegal buildings started at 5 am on Saturday. Demolition work has also been completed in one third of the illegal area. At the same time, 1200 paramilitary personnel have been deployed in view of any obstruction in law and order

Earlier, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Gyanendra Pratap Singh visited the area on Thursday (1 September 2022) and reviewed the security arrangements. He had said that one IG rank officer and three SP rank officers would be present during the eviction.

According to government figures, 299 families were living illegally in the area. The government had given notice to these families about 8 months back to vacate the land. More than 90 percent of these families have left after getting the notice.

Most of the Bengali speaking Muslims were in this area. Then there were Bengali Hindus and Gorkhas. Two-time BJP MLA from this area, Ganesh Kumar Limbu, says that most of the people living here have homes in other places as well. So they left without any protest.
