A 38 year old government aided school teacher, A Habeeb Mohammed was arrested on Tuesday under POCSO Act for sexually harassing a Class 9 student in Mudukulatur in Ramanathapuram district Tamil Nadu. The district police have urged other students of the school to come forward with complaints if they have faced sexual violence from the said teacher.

According to the New Indian Express, the incident came to light when the audio conversation of the teacher with the Class 9 minor girl went viral wherein Habeeb is heard making sexually laced telephonic conversation with the girl asking her to come to his house without the knowledge of her parents. In the conversation, Habeeb is heard making obscene comments about other girl students of the school. It is also further alleged that Habeeb used to coerce the minor girl to indulge in sexual acts for scoring better marks.

SP E Kartik has assured strict action against people involved in such abominable crimes under the stringent provisions of the POCSO Act. The All Women Police Station conducted an enquiry on Tuesday and said, “It was found that the teacher had sent obscene messages to the student on June 18th and indulged in a provocative telephonic conversation with her the next day.”

Notably, this case of sexual harassment committed by Habeeb Mohammed has not been politicised, nor has the school’s name been given out in news reports as it was done in the sexual harassment case in PSBB case. Kanimozhi has not tweeted about the case to ensure justice, neither has Dayanidhi Maran written copious letters complaining against the school administration.

Their conspicuous silence makes one wonder whether this school is run by so-called minority institution or the silence is because the perpetrator teacher belongs to Muslim community and not to a soft punching bag – Hindu Brahmin community.
