Alt-News co-founder Mohammed Zubair who has been in police custody for his hinduphobic posts on social media has petitioned the Supreme Court for bail and the dismissal of the FIR filed against him in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. Colin Gonsalves, Zubair’s counsel, urged the court to grant an urgent hearing in the case, claiming that Zubair is facing death threats and there is genuine concern for his safety.

Zubair’s lawyer Colin Gonsalves said that no crime can be figured out while reading the FIR carefully. “I’m concerned about his safety,” said Colin Gonsalves.

Alt news co-founder was arrested on June 17 by Delhi Police in connection with an inflammatory tweet against a Hindu devta in 2018. The Uttar Pradesh police filed another FIR against the Alt-News co-founder on June 1 for using derogatory language against Hindu seers.

Zubair’s lawyer, Colin Gonsalves, filed an application with the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking bail in the case filed against him by the UP police on June 1 and challenging the Allahabad High Court’s order refusing to quash the FIR filed against him by the UP police. The Supreme Court bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and J K Maheshwari agreed to hear Zubair’s petition on July 8th.

On June 13, the Allahabad High Court dismissed Mohammed Zubair’s writ petition challenging the FIR filed against him on June 1 for using derogatory language against Mahant Bajrang Muni Udasin, Rashtriya Sanrakshak of the Rashtriya Hindu Sher Sena, Yati Narsinghanand, and Swami Anand Swaroop.

While refusing to quash the FIR filed against him, the Allahabad High Court Bench of Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Ajai Kumar Srivastava ruled that Mohammed Zubair’s writ petition “lacks merit.” It also stated that the preliminary records indicate that there are sufficient grounds for investigation in the case. As a result, the court denied Zubair’s writ petition.
