Derek O’Brien, a Trinamool Congress member of the Rajya Sabha, was suspended from the Parliament on Tuesday for the entirety of the Monsoon session “for unruly behavior unbecoming of a Member of Rajya Sabha.” O’Brien was suspended after Union Minister Piyush Goyal presented a resolution against him “for continuously interfering with the business of the House, disobeying the Chair, and continuously and wilfully causing a disturbance in the House.

Even as he got up to raise the point of order, the TMC MP lost his composure. During his combative speech, O’Brien requested a discussion about Manipur and pointed a finger at the Speaker. The TMC leader was then scolded by Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar, who also commanded O’Brien to take a seat. Derek O’Brien was then ordered to leave the House by the Speaker, who immediately got up from his seat. Minister Piyush Goyal made a motion amid a commotion, which was followed by the suspension. Derek O’Brien was criticized by the Speaker just yesterday, on August 7, for “engaging in theatrics.” The TMC MP compared the Home Minister and Prime Minister to a “Washing Machine.” The TMC MP had equated the Prime Minister and Home Minister to a “Washing Machine“ after which the speaker lashed out at him. He said “This is not the way to engage in this kind of theatrics. Are you in the process of ridiculing constitutional functionalism by equating them with a washing machine?”
