The lies of Jack Dorsey lies shattered after Karnataka dismissed the petition filed by Twitter where it challenged the blocking orders issued to it by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeiTY) under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. Not only did the petition of Twitter got dismissed but also the single judge bench of Justice Krishna S Dixit imposed a fine Rs. 50 lakh on the social media giant and the fine needs to be paid within 45 days to the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority
The court categorically stated that Twitter as a foreign company cannot claim the rights given to citizens of India. The rights of freedom of expression and personal liberty guaranteed are exclusively provided to citizens of India under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India. A petition was filed by Twitter challenging ten blocking orders issued by the Central government between February 2021 and 2022 directing Twitter to take down 39 URLs.
Former CEO of Twitter and it’s co-founder Jack Dorsey during an interview on Monday with YouTube channel Breaking Points said “India, for example, was a country that had many requests around the farmers’ protests, around particular journalists that were critical of the government,”. Jack Dorsey stated that he received “many requests” from the Indian government to block accounts covering farmers’ protests and those critical of the government and also alleged that the platform was threatened of being shut down.
Reacting to this the BJP government categorised the statement made by Jack Dorsey as an outright lie. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union minister of state for IT and electronics, tweeted “This is an outright lie by Jack Dorsey, perhaps an attempt to brush out that very dubious period of Twitter’s history. Twitter under Dorsey and his team were in repeated and continuous violations of Indian law. As a matter of fact, they were in non-compliance with law repeatedly from 2020 to 2022 and it was only in June 2022 when they finally complied,”
