The Gujarat government’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has claimed in its report that social activist Teesta Setalvad wanted to enter politics. SIT quoted a witness as saying that Setalvad had told a leader for this that if Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar can be made Rajya Sabha MPs, then why not me? The report also claimed that she, along with Congress leader Ahmed Patel, was conspiring to topple the then Modi government.

The SIT said this in an affidavit filed in the city’s civil sessions court on Friday, objecting to Setalvad’s bail plea . The SIT said that the accused had hatched a bigger conspiracy with political motives.

Setalvad has been arrested along with former IPS officers RB Sreekumar and Sanjeev Bhatt for fabricating evidence to implicate innocent people in Gujarat riots cases.
