In an yet another instance of failing law and order situation in West Bengal, a tribal girl was raped by Shahabuddin Baidya, who entered the house of the girl and committed the crime there and fled after threatening the family members with dire consequences if anyone dares to lodge complaint to police.
The incident happened at Baunia village which falls under Najat police station of Sandeshkhali block of North 24 Parganas district on September 5. According to reports, Shahabuddin Baidya, who has earned notoriety for criminal activities in the area, entered the house of the girl with a firearm, first threatened Rabi Munda, the girl?s father, asking him not to raise voice, then forcefully raped his daughter while the helpless family members did not gather courage to obstruct Baidya.
Before leaving the spot, the anti-social further threatened to kill all family members if they attempt to lodge FIR with cops. Members of all five tribal families, who reside at the village, are now fearing attack on them. Though the news has already been circulated in the area, no action was taken from police. A local Hindu organisation tried to convince the girl to lodge complaint to police, but neither she nor any of his family members could gather courage to do that. This is because all of them feared retaliation from the accused and his gang.
A local person, who requested anonymity, said it?s strange that neither any intellectual, who preaches Dalit-Muslim unity nor any organisation which projects itself as messiah of Dalit tribals, has come forward for the justice of the tribal girl. ?All their activism is limited to agenda-based TV debates and running false narratives while they chose not to highlight a real issue like this.
