The Apex court gave an interim relief to former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The Supreme Court ordered on Tuesday that no coercive action should be taken against Nupur Sharma, former BJP spokesman, in connection with FIRs or complaints filed over her comments about the Prophet Mohammed during a television channel debate on 26th of May. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and J. B. Pardiwala protected Sharma from coercive action in any future FIRs or complaints while also taking note of the allegedly life-threatening threats made against her after its July 1 order.

The bench sent notices to the Center and several states, including Delhi, West Bengal, and Maharashtra, regarding Sharma’s request and requested their responses by August 10. The bench noted that it never wanted Sharma to visit every court for relief. On August 10, the bench scheduled a hearing in the case. The same bench of the top court harshly criticised Sharma for her derogatory remarks about the Prophet on July 1. They claimed that she was “single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country” and that her “loose tongue” had “set the entire country on fire.”
