On June 25, 2022, a team from Gujarat’s Anti-Terrorism Squad detained purported activist Teesta Setalvad. On June 25, about 3 p.m., she was taken into custody from her residence in Mumbai’s Juhu neighbourhood. The action was reportedly taken following the filing of an FIR against Teesta Setalvad and others for forgery in accordance with section 468 of the Indian Penal Code.

Teesta Setalvad has reportedly been taken to the Santa Cruz police station for questioning, according to ANI.

After Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that Setalvad gave the police false information on the riots in Gujarat in 2002, Setalvad was arrested right after that.

On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected allegations made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi (then CM of Gujarat) and other prominent Gujarat officials of a bigger conspiracy to cause the riots on Friday. The deceased former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri’s widow, Zakia Jafri, made these accusations in her plea that was filed with the backing of Teesta Seetalvad.

The top court declared that the appeal was “devoid of merits” in its ruling. An investigation into claims of a “bigger conspiracy” behind the Gujarat riots was rejected by a court presided over by Justice A M Khanwilkar.

Teesta Setalvad, a co-petitioner in the case, was accused by the Supreme Court in its ruling of taking advantage of Zakia Jafri’s feelings. The Special Investigation Team’s judgement to clear Modi in the riots case was rejected by the court in response to Zakia Jafri’s request for it to be reviewed.

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused Teesta Setalvad of participating in the case to malign the law enforcement and the administration.

Even the victims’ testimonies were signed by NGOs, according to Amit Shah in an interview with ANI. The Gujarat ATS is transporting Teesta Setalvad to Ahmedabad.
