Congress President Sonia Gandhi was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on Monday to testify before it in connection with a money laundering case involving the National Herald newspaper. Sonia Gandhi apparently tested positive for Covid on June 2, six days before she was called to appear before the Enforcement Directorate.
After recovering from Covid, Sonia Gandhi was discharged from the hospital in the middle of June. On June 23, the agency sent Sonia Gandhi a second summons, but the Congress president once more declined to testify before the agency, claiming that the physicians had “strictly recommended” her to rest at home following her hospitalisation on account of Covid.

Before Congress leader Rahul Gandhi showed up for interrogation at the Enforcement Directorate office on June 13, the leaders of the party raised a fuss and demonstrated at 25 party offices throughout the nation.
As Rahul Gandhi arrived at the ED office, protests were launched against the notice that had been delivered to him under the guise of a “Satyagrah” by Congress party members.

Before Rahul Gandhi arrived at the ED office, the police detained a number of Congress leaders who were creating turmoil. Randeep Singh Surjewala, the senior spokesperson for the Congress, was detained by police along with other members.

Given that the Gandhis are specifically implicated in the National Herald case, it is one of the most significant judicial cases in Indian history. In the purchase of Associated Journals Ltd (ALJ) by Young Indian Pvt Ltd, the mother-son team of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul, together with their advisors Oscar Fernandez, Motilal Vohra, and Sam Pitroda, are accused of engaging in “gross deceit and violation of trust” (YIL). Assets worth crores of rupees were allegedly transferred for a pitiful price and used for other purposes. In December 2015, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were granted unconditional bail in the case.
