An SIT has been established by the UP government to look into the case of Mohammad Zubair, the co-founder of Alt News. IG Preetinder Singh will serve as the SIT’s chairman during the investigation. The inquiry team also includes DIG Amit Kumar Verma. Mohammad Zubair is the target of cases in the Uttar Pradesh cities of Sitapur, Lakhimpur Khiri, Hathras, and Muzaffarnagar.
In a case brought against him in September of last year, Mohammad Zubair was sentenced to 14 days of judicial detention the day before by the Lakhimpur Kheri court in Uttar Pradesh. On July 13, the court will hear Zubair’s request for bail. Through video conferencing, Mohammad Zubair was brought into court from Sitapur Jail, and the FIR was amended to add sections 153B, 505(1)(b), and 505(2).

In a case that was filed last year, a court in Lakhimpur Kheri summoned Mohammad Zubair. In relation to an FIR filed for fostering animosity, the Lakhimpur Kheri police had issued a warrant against Zubair, requiring him to appear in court in 2021. A local journalist filed the complaint against Mohammad Zubair on November 25. Mohammad Zubair was shown up through a video conference on Monday at the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court. The court committed him to judicial custody for a period of 14 days after the prosecution requested police custody.

Mohammad Zubair received relief from the Supreme Court earlier today in the Sitapur case as the length of his temporary bail has been extended by the court. On Tuesday, after hearing Zubair’s argument, the judge extended the provisional bail until further instructions. The UP administration was simultaneously instructed by the Supreme Court to submit a response within 4 weeks. The case’s subsequent hearing is scheduled for September 7.
Mohammad Zubair was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on Friday in the Sitapur case brought by the Uttar Pradesh Police. However, due to other cases such as Lakhimpur Kheri, Mohammad Zubair will continue to be in jail. Last month, the Delhi Police detained Mohammad Zubair for violating religious sensibilities in one of his tweets.
