The Government of India is planning to set up a national database of citizens. Which is being seen as a step of the government towards NRC. According to information, the Union Home Ministry is planning to set up a national database of all Indian citizens, in which births and deaths of all citizens will be recorded at the national level, according to a cabinet note and a bill introduced by the ministry. Information has been received. Currently, this database is maintained by the states through local registrars.
However, earlier the proposal to link the Aadhar card with the voter ID card was made voluntary by the government. Let us tell you that there was a lot of opposition to the proposal to link Aadhaar with the voter list in Parliament.
Now, the government wants to integrate this database with the population register and voter list, Aadhar card, ration card, passport and driving license and a cabinet note has been brought to amend the Registration of Births and Deaths Act.
The Registrar General of India will maintain this database and will work with the Chief Registrars in the States to maintain it. It will update it from time to time with various agencies in charge of Aadhaar, Ration Card, Voter List, Passport and Driving License. Based on the cabinet note, it is believed that the government is preparing to move forward with the announcement of the nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Significantly, the plan to have a nationwide NRC, announced for the first time for Assam along with the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), had led to massive protests across the country nearly three years ago. Critics of this move of the government are seeing it associating it with CAA. Government officials said the cabinet is expected to consider the proposal soon and the amendment bill is also expected to be introduced in the next session of Parliament.
