The central government has ordered the Social Media Companies like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. to restrict accounts which spread fake news about Covid-19 pandemic situation, causing alarm and panic in the country.

Many social media accounts operated by prominent MPs, MLAs, politically motivated activists and so-called journalists have been time and again spreading fake news. Shockingly, they continue to spread fake news even when the nation is reeling under second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, causing a lot of alarm in public.

The government recognising the harm caused by deliberate spreading of fake news, has restricted the social media accounts of several prominent figures.

A twitter account of Trinamool Congress, Baglar Gorbo Mamata, with about 1,41000 followers has been reportedly caught spreading fake news on several occasions. It is a habit of several out of work independent journalists who are well known for their Hinduphobic and anti-Modi views are making hay by spreading lies and fake news through social media regardless of the fact that these antics are harming the country and only deepening the crisis during a severe pandemic.

INC dynasts, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have been caught several timed unabashedly spreading fake news.

News websites like the Scroll, Print and Wire are habitual liars and masters at spreading fake news. Just yesterday, the Wire was caught spreading fake news about Union Minister Rajnath Singh claiming, he told people that they can be cured of Covid just by reciting the Ramcharit Manas. When they were caught red-handed, they issued a perfunctory apology after the fake news was widely circulated through all media.

Therefore, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology stated that the government has only ordered restriction of social media accounts which are spreading fake news.

The usual suspects who are habitual to spreading fake news are crying hoarse and trying to spread a canard that their social media accounts have been restricted because they are critical of the central government’s handling of the pandemic.

This suggestion is laughable, as many of the BJP members and its followers have themselves been critical of the inept administration and red-tapism at the ground level despite good leadership at the centre by PM Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath. In fact BJP’s followers have not spared the centre for continuation of discriminatory policies like special scholarships for the so-called minorities, etc.

Last but not the least, Twitter and other social media companies have invariably targeted social media accounts critical of communist and jihadist ideology. So, the claim of these fake news super spreaders to be martyrs of government oppression is as true as the sun rising in the west!
