Lata Mangeshkar and her family had close connections with the family of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. Lata Mangeshkar never resisted from wishing Veer Savarkar in his birth and death anniversary nor she shied away from showing her connections with Veer Savarkar.
A twitter user (curiosweety) with username @curiosweetie very beautifully described the connections of Mangeshkar family and Veer Savarkar. Here the the thread the netizen wrote-
So we were discussing and mourning about Lata ji today. Dad tells me some trivia. Lata ji’s father Deenanath Mangeshkar and Savarkarji were fast friends. When Lataji had not yet started singing in movies and Mangeshkar family were not so well to do.Savarkar ji had lent some money to his friend. Later on Veer Savarkar was incarcerated, his property and degrees snatched and the fortunes of both families were reversed after Lataji started singing actively in movies. After her father’s death, she got to know of the loan her father had taken from Savarkar and she also knew that Savarkar family was living in penury. She went to return the money but Savakar ji refused saying, “the loan was between 2 friends, she is as much his daughter and fathers don’t take money from daughters”. Lata ji’s drawing room had 2 portraits (when my grand dad visited) one was her father Deenanath Mangeshkar’s and other Veer Savarkar’s. Years later when Sudhir Phadke ji was making the movie on Savarkar ji’s life, he didn’t have funds and was collecting donations for it. He came to our house as well given my grandfathers association with Savarkar ji and HMS. He shared his experience of meeting Lata ji. When Mr. Phadke went to ask for donation for the movie, Lata ji became so emotional and she removed both her diamond bangles and handed them to him with tears in her eyes. They were her favorite piece of jewellery and so she gave her most cherished possession for the movie.

Lata Mangeshkar once in social media cited about the close relationship of Mangeshkar family with Veer Savarkar. In social media she wrote “Veer Savarkar ji aur hamare pariwar ke bahut ghanisht sambandh the, isiliye unhone mere pita ji ki natak company ke liye natak “Sanyasta Khadag“ likha tha. Is natak ka pehla prayog 18th Sep 1931 ko hua tha,is natak mein se ek geet bahut lokpriya hua”(” Veer Savarkar and my family has deep connections, that’s why he wrote a play “Sanyasta Khadag“ for my father’s theatre company, the platy first launched on 18th Sep 1931, the song (tagged in tweet) featured in the play is very popular.”) she tweeted.”
Lata Mangeshkar once lashed out at the haters of Veer Savarkar. She wrote “Namaskar. Today is the birth anniversary of Veer Savarkar ji. I bow to his personality, and his patriotism. Nowadays, a few people have been criticising Savarkar ji. However, those people do not know the stature of Savarkar’s patriotism and self-respect.”
