Kanhaiya Lal, a Hindu tailor, was brutally murdered on June 28 by two Islamists named Mohammed Riyaz Akhtar and Mohammed Gos over a post endorsing former BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma. It has since been discovered that his name, picture, and exact location were leaked and made popular by his next-door neighbour Nazim, who had also complained against Kanhaiya Lal for the false post.

Five days after Nazim’s initial complaint, on June 15, 2022, Kanhaiya lal went to the police and asked for help and legal assistance.

He got a call from the Dhanmandi Police station on June 11, 2022, informing him that a complaint had been made against him. He was summoned to the police station, where he discovered that his neighbour Nazim had filed a complaint against him. He revealed to Lal that his community exerted pressure on him to register the complaint. Additionally, Nazim asserted that he was aware Lal couldn’t have shared the message because he didn’t know to use the phone.

Later, Kanhiya Lal learned that Nazim and five other members of his neighborhood were working for Reece at his store. He was not permitted to open the store. In his complaint, he said that five to seven persons were constantly performing reece at his store and that they would have murdered him if he had opened the store.

Kanhaiya Lal also claimed in his complaint that Nazim and other people disclosed his information to their community groups, including his picture and address. They allegedly incited the community members to kill Kanhaiya Lal if they saw him anywhere or if he started a store.

They allegedly incited the community members to kill Kanhaiya Lal if they saw him anywhere or if he started a store. They are forcing me not to establish my shop, he stated. They’ll kill me if I open my store.

He asked the police to protect him and assist him in opening his store.

According to reports, despite Kanhaiya Lal’s request, the Police did not provide security. The people who were threatening him were called by ASI Bhanwarlal, who also started a “compromise” between Kanhaiya Lal and the others. He assured Lal that nothing would happen because Lal and the other party had reached an agreement. He instructed Lal to exercise caution and call the police if he had any suspicions.

Lal then sent a letter to the police stating that he did not want any legal action taken against the five because there had been a settlement. After Kanhaiya Lal was slain, ASI Bhanwarlal was fired, and ADG for Law and Order Hawasingh Ghumaria announced that they would question the five people who signed the compromise agreement on how the incident happened despite it.
