Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar has written a letter to the DGP directing him to ensure that there is no slaughter of cows on the day of Bakrid i.e. July 10. Let us tell you that Narvekar has recently become the Speaker of the Assembly in the Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis government.

Cow slaughter is a crime in Maharashtra. It was banned by the BJP-Shiv Sena government. Seller and possessor of cow meat can be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years and with fine which may extend to ten thousand. However, slaughter of calves and cows can be done by obtaining a certificate of ‘fit to slaughter’ from the local administration.

Earlier, Lok Sabha MP and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal had appealed to the Muslims of Assam to respect the sentiments of Hindus. He had appealed not to sacrifice cows during Eid-ul-Adha.

Ajmal is also the president of the Assam State Jamiat Ulama (ASJU), the apex body of major organizations of Islamic scholars affiliated with the Deobandi School of Thinking.
