Petition that requested BAN on 26 Quranic verses
Majority of the Muslims around the world believe that the Quran is unadulterated, and has been preserved in its original form since it was revealed to the prophet of Islam, Mohammad, by the Islamic God(Allah), in the sixth century in modern day Arabia. So the general consensus in the Muslim world is that Quran is the final word of God(Allah) and it has to be true and justified. It is also believed that for a Muslim to be a true Muslim, he/she should not question the authenticity of Quran, nor should one attempt to reform or correct any part of Quran – not even a punctuation or grammar there in. Since it has been revealed by God(Allah) himself, there cannot be any imperfections in it, nor can there be anything untrue in it. Hence, anyone, or any act of asking for correcting the Quran is considered blasphemous, and comes under harsh criticism and protest by Muslims – in many cases resulting in attacks, including threats to life, beheading of one who questions it. Street protests, rioting and arson is also not uncommon as seen in the case of Salman Rushdie during the 80s. Critics who have called for reforms or questioned the Quran and Islamic beliefs have been issued “Fatwa”( the Islamic decree as prescribed by Quranic Shariah law), which gives permission to Muslims to behead anyone who criticizes Islam.
While Muslims talk about perfection, purity, mercy and kindness in the Quran, critics point at numerous imperfections and objectionable content in the Quran that are against the norms of humanity. Critics also point at several contradictions in the Quran, and question as to why, if the Islamic God(Allah) is so merciful and kind as claimed by Muslims, does he talk of killing, hate and discrimination towards non Muslims? – merely because of believing in a different god other than Allah? If the Quran preaches love and peace, why do Muslims act in contradiction to it and resort to violence in the name of Allah? Also time and again, Non-Muslims are puzzled at the objectionable attitude of Muslims towards the beliefs, culture and traditions of Non-Muslims, their contempt towards festivities and celebrations of Non-Muslims, their contempt towards places of worship of Non-Muslims etc. Is the Muslim attitude towards Non-Muslims inspired by certain verses from Quran? Some educated Muslims say that the verses have been misinterpreted by fanatic Islamic preachers to provoke ordinary peace loving Muslims, however the critics question, if that is true, how is that every interpretation of verses in Quran across every country and by every preacher the same? Why does a Islamic cleric in India interpret it the same way as a cleric in Pakistan, Afghanistan or Syria?
Recently Mr. Wasim Rizvi, an prominent Shia Muslim leader in India, filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India asking for ban on 26 verses in the Quran, reasoning that they incite violence, hate and discrimination against Non-Muslims. Mr Rizvi joins the list of progressive educated people, who think certain teachings in Quran inspire Muslims to hate Non-Muslims on basis of their beliefs, culture and tradition, and it results in divide and mistrust in the society, and poses a challenge to coexist with other faiths. Mr Rizvi further states that these verses were later additions to the original Quran ( which was supposedly peaceful as per his opinion) and should be eliminated to bring reform in the Quran and Muslim society. As expected, Mr Rizvi was met with fierce criticism and protests by Muslims, and the larger Islamic body of scholars and clergy in India outrightly rejected his claim for the same reason as mentioned earlier.
Although it is believed that Quran and Hadiths have more than hundred references to objectionable verses ( as per the available Islamic resources themselves) , the focus of this article is on only those 26 verses as pointed by Mr. Wasim Rizvi. Interested readers may delve further in-depth to explore more on other verses from Quran and references in Hadiths ( the life and living account of prophet Mohammad) for their knowledge.
The meanings of the verses below are directly taken from the available authentic Islamic resources and translators( as acknowledged by other Islamic scholars across the Muslim world to be the most authentic) . None of these are personal opinions, personal translations or personal interpretations of the author of the article. The readers are free to check the authenticity of these references from whichever sources they can. The original Arabic verse, and their meanings in Hindi and English are provided for understanding.
Following are the authors whose translations have been used for reference. The reader can read more about these translators and research independently.

So, do the Quranic verses do indeed inspire hate and violence against non-Muslims? What does the Quran say about dealing with Non-Muslims in war or in normal life? Does the Quran see Muslims and Non-Muslims differently? Does the Quran divide people on the basis of their beliefs? What does the Quran say about people worshipping other God than Allah? Let us analyze what these 26 verses say ( This is not a complete list of such verses however, readers can research and read other such verses by referring to authentic sources) . It is up to the reader to then decide and conclude whether these verses are good or not so good for a civilized society.

English: And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah( disbelief in Allah or worshipping other gods than Allah) is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- îaram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
- Q 3:151 – Chapter 3 (Surat Al-Imran [Family of Imran] , Verse (Ayaat) 151

English: We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they joined others in worship with Allah, for which He had sent no authority; their abode will be the Fire and how evil is the abode of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers).
- Q 4:56 – Chapter 4 (Surat Al-Nisaa[The women]), verse(Ayaat) 56
Surely! Those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) We shall burn them in Fire. As often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for other skins that they may taste the punishment. Truly, Allah is Ever Most Powerful, all wise.
- Q 4:89 – Chapter 4 (Surat Al-Nisaa[The women]), verse(Ayaat) 89
They wish that you reject Faith, as they have rejected (Faith), and thus that you all become equal (like one another). So take not Auliya’ (protectors or friends) from them, till they emigrate in the Way of Allah (to Muhammad SAW). But if they turn back (from Islam), take (hold) of them and kill them wherever you find them, and take neither Auliya’ (protectors or friends) nor helpers from them.
- Q4:101 – Chapter 4 (Surat Al-Nisaa[The women]), verse(Ayat) 101
And when you (Muslims) travel in the land, there is no sin on you if you shorten your Salat (prayer) if you fear that the disbelievers may attack you, verily, the disbelievers are ever unto you open enemies.
- Q 5:14 – Chapter 5(Surat Al-Maidah [The table spread with food]), verse (Ayat) 14
And from those who call themselves Christians, We took their covenant, but they have abandoned a good part of the Message that was sent to them. So We planted amongst them enmity and hatred till the Day of Resurrection (when they discarded Allah’s Book, disobeyed Allah’s Messengers and His Orders and transgressed beyond bounds in Allah’s disobedience), and Allah will inform them of what they used to do.
- Q 5:51 – Chapter 5(Surat Al-Maidah [The table spread with food]), verse (Ayat) 51
O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliya’ (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but Auliya’ to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliya’, then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allah guides not those people who are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers and unjust).
- Q 5: 57 – Chapter 5(Surat Al-Maidah [The table spread with food]), verse (Ayat) 57
O you who believe! Take not for Auliya’ (protectors and helpers) those who take your religion for a mockery and fun from among those who received the Scripture (Jews and Christians) before you, nor from among the disbelievers; and fear Allah if you indeed are true believers.
- Q8:65 – Chapter 8(Surat Al-Anfal[The spoils of war]), verse (Ayat) 65

O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)! Urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast persons amongst you, they will overcome two hundred, and if there be a hundred steadfast persons they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they (the disbelievers) are people who do not understand.
- Q 8:69 – Chapter 8(Surat Al-Anfal[The spoils of war]), verse (Ayat) 69

English: But once the Sacred Months have passed, kill the polytheists ˹who violated their treaties˺ wherever you find them,1 capture them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them on every way.
English: O you who believe (in Allah’s Oneness and in His Messenger (Muhammad SAW)! Verily, the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and in the Message of Muhammad SAW) are Najasun (impure). So let them not come near Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) after this year, and if you fear poverty, Allah will enrich you if He will, out of His Bounty. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
- Q 9:23 – Chapter 9 (Surat Al-Taubah[The repentance]) , Verse (Ayat) 23

English: Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allah, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.
- Q 9:37 – Chapter 9 (Surat Al-Taubah[The repentance]) , Verse (Ayat) 37
English: The postponing (of a Sacred Month) is indeed an addition to disbelief: thereby the disbelievers are led astray, for they make it lawful one year and forbid it another year in order to adjust the number of months forbidden by Allah, and make such forbidden ones lawful. The evil of their deeds seems pleasing to them. And Allah guides not the people, who disbelieve.
- Q 9:58 – Chapter 9 (Surat Al-Taubah[The repentance]) , Verse (Ayat) 58

English: And of them are some who accuse you (O Muhammad SAW) in the matter of (the distribution of) the alms. If they are given part thereof, they are pleased, but if they are not given thereof, behold! They are enraged!
- Q 9:11 – Chapter 9 (Surat Al-Taubah[The repentance]) , Verse (Ayat) 111
English: Verily, Allah has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allah’s Cause, so they kill (others) and are killed. It is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and the Quran.
