More than 70 years have passed since the country gained independence. However, there has been a lot of fuss about ‘Halala’ in Islam up until now. For decades, Muslim women have been exploited by this heinous behaviour. But now, whether it’s a case of triple talaq or a practice like halala, Muslim women have begun to call what’s wrong what it is.
A case of halala by the Panchas on two woman victims of triple talaq has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district. However, the victims’ women have issued a warning, stating unequivocally that they will donate their lives but will not perform halala. Victims of triple talaq say their in-laws are pressuring them to do halala in order to reunite them.
According to a victim of triple talaq, she married a young man from the Kandhla police station area of Shamli on November 2, 2021, and her in-laws requested a bullet bike and two lakh rupees in dowry. Her three brothers-in-law also attempted to rape her, and her husband assaulted her, according to the woman. The woman claims that her husband gave triple talaq on January 15 this year and then called her talaq three times in the panchayat on January 26. The woman reported the incident to the Baraut police, but no action was taken. The in-laws conducted a Panchayat at their home last month in April, and the Panch pressed them to perform Halala. The second victim of triple talaq, on the other hand, claims to have been married to a young man from Meerut for nearly ten years and has two children. The husband now wants to marry another girl, so they issued her triple talaq. However, her spouse is pressuring her to compromise on halala.
In this case, BJP district president Surajpal Singh claims that the victims will get justice after filing a complaint with the SP. According to media sources, the district’s SP, Neeraj Kumar Jadaun, stated that once the victim women’s complaint is received, action will be done against the offenders. The three talaq victims allege that the Panchs in the panchayat sided with their in-laws as well. It is said that if she performs halala with another man, she will also perform nikah with him.
‘Nikah Halala’ is another name for Halala. This ceremony is for divorced ladies who, owing to unforeseen circumstances, wish to remarry their first husband. They must adhere to Halala in order to do so. If a man divorces his wife, he cannot remarry her until he has divorced another woman, according to Shariat law.
