The owner of Baba Biriyani, Mukhtar Baba, who was detained recently for sponsoring the violence that broke out in Kanpur on June 3, informed the SIT that stone pelters were paid between Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 to engage in violence.

Mukhtar Baba claimed during his questioning that the incident on June 3rd, when a mob of radical Islamists wreaked havoc on the streets of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was pre-planned. He asserted that the 15–16 juveniles charged with planning the assault had been given a variety of duties.

He further revealed how the organisers sat in his shop and watched the entire act of violence live on a video call. According to reports, during interrogation by SIT team in charge, Sanjeev Tyagi, Mukhtar also gave several new names of miscreants who actively helped orchestrating the Kanpur violence.

It may be recalled that reports had also revealed that the children, involved in the violence for stone-pelting and throwing petrol bombs were paid and served biryani to take part in it. Following these reports, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) asked the Police to investigate the case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Reportedly, Mukhtar Baba, who had been missing since June 3, was apprehended by the Kanpur Police on June 21. Zafar Hayat Hashmi, the main suspect in the case, apparently received enormous sums of cash from Mukhtar Ansari, who also purportedly crowdfunded the violence.

According to reports, Mukhtar Baba served the mob with biryani on the day of the unrest.Earlier, Mukhtar Baba’s name came due to establishment of his biryani restaurant by grabbing enemy property and a piece of an old temple has also been linked to Baba Biryani.
