An official with the Delhi Police Crime Branch said on Wednesday that the Crime Branch has busted a Mewat-based gang of cyber fraudsters and detained five members of the gang.
Moin (20), Nazir (20), Shahrukh (21), Rashid (21) and Liyakat (20) have all been identified as natives of Haryana’s Mewat area.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), Rohit Meena, a man filed a complaint in September last year stating that he was defrauded of Rs 1.5 lakh through the PhonePe app under the guise of money transfer.
As a result, a complaint was filed, and a computer fraud ring in Mewat led by Naseem alias Nassi and Liyakat was identified. After a brief altercation, accused Naseem was apprehended in May of this year.
Meena stated that they received information on September 16 that some active members of the Mewat gang would be attending a party on Punhana Road near Palwal.
As a result, a team was formed and arrived in Palwal, where they learned that five members of the gang would be staying at a hotel on Punhana Road.
“Police set a trap, and the five members of the gang were caught from the hotel, where they were all partying,” the DCP added.
During prolonged interrogation, the defendants revealed that they scammed multiple people through online fraud in collusion with their assistants.
The accused admitted to calling victims under the guise of transferring money and asking them to accept payment via UPI PIN. When the victims accepted, the money was fraudulently deducted from their bank accounts and credited to the accused’s accounts.
