Justice DY Chandrachud who disappointed Hindus with his Sabrimala Verdict is set to become the 50th Chief Justice of India. The current Chief Justice of India UU Lalit has selected Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor and therefore it is clear that India will see DY Chandrachud being the next and the 50th Chief Justice of India. UU Lalit handed over a letter to Justice DY Chandrachud on 11th of October designating him as the next CJI. The letter was handed over in the presence of the other judges of the Supreme Court.

 

Current CJI Lalit will retire on 8th of November and his successor ie. DY Chandrachud will be taking the oath on 9th of November. Justice DY Chandrachud will have a longer tenure of two years. According to the Memorandum of Procedure, the Centre asks the outgoing CJI to name the successor, just before a month of retirement. On October 7, Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju sent a letter to the CJI for sending his recommendations for the appointment of his successor.
