It is not uncommon to become invested in a TV show, following the intricate plot lines and becoming attached to the characters. However, it can be jarring and disheartening when a show’s depiction of one’s culture and beliefs is insensitive or inappropriate. This was the case for me recently while watching an episode of the popular Western show Supernatural, which depicted Hindu gods in a highly disrespectful manner.

In Season 5, Episode 19, titled “Hammer of God,” the show portrays the Goddess Kali and Lord Ganesha being mercilessly killed at the hands of the character Lucifer. In addition, Lord Ganesha is shown being blasted by Lucifer, who simply raises his hand. This depiction is highly disrespectful to Hinduism and the beliefs of millions of people around the world who hold these deities in high regard. Furthermore, the show portrays Goddess Kali in an intimate position with other gods and shows her kissing. This depiction is highly inappropriate and offensive to Hindus who worship Kali as a fierce and powerful deity, not as a sexual object.

The depiction of Hindu gods in this manner is not only disrespectful but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces negative perceptions of the Hindu religion. Creators and producers of TV shows and movies need to be mindful and respectful of other cultures and beliefs, especially when their work has the potential to influence a wide audience. This is not the first time that Hinduism has been misrepresented or disrespected in popular media. However, it is important to speak out against such depictions and demand that creators and producers be more responsible and respectful in their portrayals of different cultures and beliefs.

It is important to note that while Supernatural is a work of fiction, it has a wide audience and influence. Portrayals of religions and cultures should be handled with care and respect, as they have the power to shape people’s perceptions and attitudes toward them. Creators and producers need to do their research and consult with members of the affected communities to ensure accuracy and sensitivity.

In conclusion, the depiction of Hindu gods in Supernatural’s “Hammer of God” episode is highly disrespectful and offensive to Hindus. It is our responsibility as viewers to demand better and more responsible representations of different cultures in popular media.”
