Fear Of Earthquake Grips Delhi-NCR

More than 20 small tremors in less than two month, the fear that a Big one is coming looms large on the people of Delhi NCR (National Capital Region, India) .

Delhi High Court has taken suo moto cognizance and has asked all local authorities to submit a report on how prepared they are in case of a major earthquake in National Capital.

Delhi NCR falls under seismic zone – 4, that indicates that higher vulnerability for high ranges earthquakes.

Rohatak a town in Haryana near Delhi is experiencing earthquakes almost twice a week for last two months. Experts are saying that local fault system around Delhi is quite active. “such fault systems around Delhi are capable of producing an earthquake of magnitude around 6 to 6.5“.

Not only in Delhi, in last two days, tremors were felt all across Himalayan belt in India. From Mizoram and Meghalaya in North East to Ladakh, Himachal and Jammu Kashmir, strong tremors were felt in last two days.

Dr Kalachand Sain, Chief of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, said that while one can not predict time, place or exact scale, the constant seismic activity around Delhi NCR indicates that a major earthquake could occur in the national capital.
